Here's Some of America's Recent Mass Shootings


America is no stranger to mass shootings, but it feels as though so many more shootings classified as mass-murder active shooter situations have killed a growing number of people in each shot. Here's some recent, significant American shootings:

2018 Parkland, Florida

America's 9th deadliest mass shooting occured only a while ago in the safest city of Florida; Parkland. The city's high school, home to 3300 students and staff members, was targeted by a former student that had recently been expelled.

The shooting had left 17 people dead, including teachers and many students below the age of 18 (except one student). This shooting sparked a series of conversations surrounding how to prevent further school shootings.

 

2017 Las Vegas, Nevada

Stephen Paddock, a suspected man believed to have been the attacker of America's deadliest mass shooting in modern day history, was the lone person involved in the shooting from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel onto a concert crowd.

The shooting killed 59 people, and injured hundreds of others. It was confirmed the deadliest mass shooting ever, breaking a previous record that had been set only two years prior at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

 

2017 Sutherland Springs, Texas

America's deadliest ever shooting in a place of worship; a church shooting in the small Texan city of Sutherland Springs left a whopping 27 people dead and everybody else inside of the church injured. The community went into paralysis.

Sparked by domestic family drama between the suspect and his ex-girlfriend's family, the gunman had legally purchased guns even after many declared he shouldn't have been able to. It lead to the massacre being the 5th deadliest American mass shooting ever.

 

2016 Orlando, Florida

America's 2nd deadliest mass shooting in history is, unfortunately, claimed under the name of ISIS. Reports indicated that Omar Mateen was responsible for shooting and killing 49 people inside of Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

The nightclub shooting had injured many others, and commenced a standoff with police. It ended with police breaching the building and killing the suspect. The attacker showed his own ties to the terror group, pledging allegiance during the attack to police.

 

2015 San Bernandino, California

The tenth deadliest mass shooting in American history left 14 people dead in the name of ISIS as well. It was conducted by a couple of which claimed to have ties with the Islamic State terror group, saying their murders were done in their names. Both suspects also died, totalling the amount of fatalities at 16.

The shooting was at a Christmas holiday party at their nearby office building. The shooting did injure many other office workers, and was seen as a catastrophic incident. It sparked a police chase, that ended the incident. The suspects had their child in the backseat.

 

2015 Umpqua College

Umpqua Community College was the victim of America's 20th deadliest mass shooting, of which ten people died (including the perp.) in an attack on an American school campus. The attack didn't recieve as much media attention than it deserved.

The mass shooting is the first yet on this list that wasn't carried out with the use of semi-automatic rifles, and was in fact carried out using handguns. It's one of the worst mass shootings ever carried out not using semi-automatic weapons.

 

2013 Washington, DC

Landing in 14th spot (so far) in the deadliest American mass shooting, an attack at a Washington Navy Yard left thirteen people dead and many others injured, including the death of the perpetrator.

The weapons of choice were also not semi-automatics, the second in a row though one of the furthest down on the list. The gunman used a shotgun and a handgun in the massacre that left the 13 victims dead in Washington DC.

 

2012 Sandy Hook, Newtown

At an American elementary school, a horrid mass shooting attack using semi-automatic riffles alongside bolt-action riffle, an attack on children had left a shocking amount of 28 dead, including the perpetrator, in Newtown city.

The mass shooting attack is one of the worst attacks on American schools, and said to be the fourth deadliest mass shooting in modern American history according to recorded data. Many others were injured.
