Police are eyeing the potential of terrorism as a man was reported deliberately and trying to strike pedestrians in Philadelphia, seriously injuring at least one person. Police had shot and killed the driver of a black Honda in the city.
According to reports, the incident began when the car had reportedly began speeding up and slamming into a pedestrian who had flipped onto the car's hood. The driver apparently drove away from the scene in a speeding fashion.
The pedestrian he struck was not identified, and is said to have been seriously injured in the apparently intentional car strike.
As the driver of the Honda began searching for other people to hit, according to police reports, they began their operation in order to engage and kill the suspect.
The driver of the car was shot and killed by police officers, who then searched the vehicle for any potential weapons. It's unclear if they found any. They then identified the suspect as a 30-year-old, but refused to name him to media sources.
If this were an apparent terror attack, it wouldn't be the first time a car is used as a weapon of terror in the United States within the past year. Take a look:
New York attack
A man of Uzebekistan descent, in the name of ISIS, drove a vehicle into a crowd of civilians on a bike path near the World Trade Centers of New York City. At least eight died, most of which were tourists, and over 12 were injured in the deadliest terror attack in the city since the 2001 attacks of 9/11.
Charlottesville
One of the most iconic vehicular attacks in American history only killed one person in a relatively quiet college town in Virginia. The President's response drew immense populairty and criticism. A woman was killed when a white supremacist drove his car into a crowd of protesters, injuring another 24 people.
Attacks using vehicles have also killed dozens worldwide and have mostly been claimed by Islamic extremists. In Edmonton, Canada, only months ago, a man drove a car into five people injuring them. In Nice, France, a truck left 84 people dead and hundreds of others injured. In Berlin, a truck killed 12 and injured over 20 others. In London, numerous attacks involving vehicles have killed dozens.
